Early Extension
What the heck is early extension in the golf swing? Essentially it is not staying in your posture throughout the back and down swing and through impact. Standing up too early gets the body, moreover the hips, in the way of the of the hands and the club. As a result you will make ineffectual compensations which will usually result in poor contact. Poor contact can result in next to no distance or you being in the trees. No fun. Best case scenario, the golfer's glutes in the picture above would stay in contact with the white line until after impact with the ball. As you can see from this picture he is in early extension - His hips/glutes are off the white line at impact. Dave Phillips is "The Man" at The Titleist Performance Institute. He explains early extension beautifully in this video. Now this could be happening because you are not focusing on your posture... Or you are too much in a hurry to stand up... Or perhaps you saw a squirrel. They are everywhere on golf courses those cute furry little buggers! Or... This could be happening due to the physical limitations your body has. The good news is all of these causes are fixable. (except the squirrels!)
Early Extension is defined as any forward movement (thrust) of the lower body towards the golf ball during the downswing. This swing characteristic causes the arms and club to get stuck behind your body during the downswing, and forces your torso to raise up and elevate through the hitting zone. Early Extension usually causes two typical miss hits, the block to the right and a hook to the left. And as most competitive players know, having two misses, one to the right and one to the left, can be disastrous in tournament play. Players that have this fault will also complain of getting stuck or trapped, this is due to the fact that the lower body has moved closer to the golf ball on the downswing. As a result the body is in the way of the arms on the downswing and thus the term I feel stuck or trapped.
What are the causes?
The Body-Swing Connection™Physical Parameters Causing Early Extension and How to Diagnose: In order to not early extend during the downswing several physical characteristics must be developed. First and foremost, research has shown that any limitation in performing a full deep squat or full hip bend can force a player to early extend during the downswing. Failure to perform these movements means generalized stiffness or asymmetry in the musculature and joints of the lower body. These limitations will always prevent a good address position and force players to alter their spinal posture throughout the golf swing. If the pelvis is unable to rotate around the lead hip due to joint or muscular restrictions then forward and lateral movements will dominate the pattern. Next, the ability to separate your upper body from your lower body allows the lower body to stabilize while rotating your shoulders through impact. Limited trunk to pelvis separation is usually caused by reduced spinal and rib cage mobility and shortened lat flexibility. Finally, the ability to stabilize your lower body is directly proportional to gluteal and abdominal strength and control of the pelvic musculature, which helps control the orientation and movement of the pelvis during the downswing. These muscles help prevent the lower body from thrusting towards the golf ball during the downswing.
With TPI Golf Fitness we will test for and work to fix the physical limitations that cause the various swing faults. The Body Swing Connection is a very important piece of the golf fitness and swing puzzle. What are some of these physical limitations?
Inability to do a deep squat or a full hip bend (touch your toes) will impair your ability to hold your posture
Tightness in the lead hip will prevent rotation and encourage lateral and upward movement
Inability to disassociate turning the hips from the torso
Poor glute and core strength in order to drive the pelvis into the correct movement

Tom Fielding Golf School - Reserving 2 holes and practise on an actual golf course. (Par 3 and Par 4)
Tom Fielding Golf School has made arrangements where up to 2 groups of golfers can enjoy the private use of two golf holes for unlimited hitting ranging from Driver, fairway play on various lies to pitch/chipping/bunker and putting.
There will 3 options to choose from:
A 2 hours lesson with unlimited practise on the privately reserved 2 holes, followed by 9 holes after a lunch break (All day)
A 3 hour lesson incorporating 2 hours on the privately reserved 2 holes with unlimited practise followed by a 1 hours putting lesson and practise. (1/2 day in the morning)
A 4 hour lesson and unlimited practise on the privately reserved 2 holes. (1/2 day in the morning)
Timing: Tom Fielding Golf School plans to hold the this special golf school training and practise day once a month from March 2019. I would like to invite all my students that are keen to take this rare opportunity to be able to practise on 2 actual golf holes. Single booking are available as well as forming your own group. (minimum numbers is 3 and limited to 8. If you have golfing friends that are interested, you can invite them as well.
The first date is March 17th 209 (Sunday). Start time is 8am

Start Time: 8:00am, however if you would prefer a later starting time, it is still possible to change the time but the earlier you can confirm the better the chances of success.

Unlimited practicing on your privately reserved genuine par 3 and par 4 holes. I can hit as many times from the same spot as you like! To be able to practice shots many times from various situations, like; Drivers, fairway woods and irons as well as short approaches, like chipping, pitching as well as bunkers will be invaluable for your golf improvement journey, especially with regards to the chance to practise your SHORT GAME. There is no other environment where you can practice while receiving advice from Tom your golf coach in an endlessly private environment.
